Five ways to get your dog to sleep through the night

Many of us struggle with getting our pets to sleep through the night. Getting them to sleep at an average human sleeping time is pretty crucial because it makes our lives a lot easier. A well-rested dog is healthier and can provide you with hours of quality bonding and entertainment.

How many hours of sleep does your dog need each day?

Sleep requirements vary from dog to dog. The average adult dog needs between 8 and 13 hours of sleep daily. Younger dogs, puppies, and senior dogs need more sleep than adults. Puppies require around 11 hours, while seniors may need up to 20 hours of sleep each day. If you feel your dog is sleeping more than usual, this could be a sign of an underlying health issue, and a visit to the vet may be needed.

Here are some tips for getting your dog to sleep through the night:
  1. Provide more mental and physical stimulation. A tired dog is a happy dog, and there are several things you can do to help your furry friend get a good night's sleep. Take them for a long walk or run before bedtime, play some interactive games like fetch or tug-of-war, and make sure they have plenty of toys to keep them occupied. You may also want to consider enrolling them in a dog obedience class or training session; the exercise will tire them out, and the challenges will engage their minds.

  2. Find the perfect sleeping spot. First, try to find a spot that is quiet and away from distractions. A bedroom or other small room may work well if your dog is easily excited or distracted. You can also try using a crate or bed with high sides to give your dog a sense of security. Finally, provide plenty of soft bedding and blankets to help your dog stay warm and cozy.

  3. Feed them at the correct times. The best time to feed your dog is just before bedtime. This way, they'll have enough energy to last through the night and won't be as likely to wake you up in the middle of the night begging for food. It's also important to avoid feeding your dog too much before bedtime, as this can cause them to have trouble sleeping.

  4. Go potty right before bed. For some dogs, the urge to pee comes on so strongly that they just can't hold it any longer. That is why it is essential to take your dog outside to potty right before bed. If you take him out before bedtime, your dog will be less likely to wake up in the middle of the night with a full bladder or bowel movement.

  5. Establish a regular bedtime routine. This should consist of some type of exercise followed by a few minutes of cuddles and treats before tucking your puppy in for the night. Turn off all sources of light in your home and make sure there are no distractions to keep him awake.
